Is Your Workspace Spine Friendly?

Plenty of our patients spend a large portion of their day sitting at their desks. There’s plenty of evidence that shows too much sitting has negative impacts on your spine, but what can you do if you are required to sit for your job? Here are our tips to improve your workspace so you (and your spine) can feel better at the end of the day.

YOUR CHAIR

Let’s start with the source of all that sitting – your chair! Oversitting can have serious consequences, so it’s important that you sit in the right chair when you are required to be in that position for long periods of time. Find a chair that is comfortable for your body, but also good for your posture. Your chair should also have arm support, adjustable height, and the ability to roll or swivel. A chair with these functions can help support you while you sit, rather than cause problems.

YOUR DESK

It may seem like there isn’t a whole lot you can do about a desk, but awareness of the problems of over-sitting has lead to an increase in the availability of standing desks. Standing desks help take pressure off of your back caused by oversitting and can help improve your posture. If you aren’t sitting, you will have a harder time developing poor sitting posture after all!

If standing desks aren’t an option, remember to get up and move around every hour. This doesn’t have to be a whole yoga sequence (though it certainly can be!) and we are happy to suggest some stretches you can do at your desk. Even taking a quick walk to the water cooler can have a big impact.

YOUR SCREEN

Your monitor should be at eye level or just below and it’s important to aim to keep your head level. Spending the majority of your day with your heave even slightly tilted can cause issues with your neck and shoulders. If you work from a laptop, stack some books up to keep it at eye level or invest in a laptop stand.
