Stay Hydrated for a Healthy Spine

Proper hydration is important no matter the season, but especially so during the hot months of summer. As we spend more time outside, it seems we also forget to stay hydrated. Here is why proper hydration is so important to the health of your body and spine.

Your Health and Hydration

Did you know that the human body is made up of about 65% water? The majority of body functions rely on proper hydration and every single cell in the body requires water to function. Water does so much for the body including regulating temperature, carrying nutrients and oxygen to cells, lubricating the joints, flushing out toxins, and protecting organs and body tissues.

Spinal Health and Hydration

Hydration is vital to the entire body, including the spine. The discs in the spine are comprised of mostly water, but they are unable to absorb water like the rest of the body does. The spinal discs get nutrition (including water) through imbibition. Imbibition is a process that results when proper motion takes place between the joints around each disc. The motion creates an effect like a pump and nutrition can move in and out of the discs, which means proper hydration is necessary for nutrient delivery.

How Much Water Do You Need to Stay Hydrated?

The old rule of thumb says you should drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water every day. But everybody is different, so everybody has different water requirements. A better goal is to drink half your body weight in ounces each day. So, if you weigh 180 pounds, you should drink 90 ounces of water throughout the day. Keep in mind that coffee and alcohol are diuretics and can dehydrate your body, so if you consume them regularly, factor in some extra ounces.

Misalignments and restrictions in the spine can affect the imbibition process, which means spinal discs may not get the nutrition they need. Without properly hydrated spinal discs, degeneration, instability, and eventually spinal decay can occur. When spinal health declines, it also impacts the central nervous system, which communicates with every cell, organ, and system in the body. So, without adequate hydration, the health of the discs, spine, and even the body as a whole suffers. With regular chiropractic care, subluxations are removed and proper alignment is restored. This helps the imbibition process, so with regular adjustments, you can help your body better absorb water and stay healthy. In the full swing of summer, it is especially important to stay hydrated.
